Kasra Bani Amerian, a political prisoner with cancer, has been without medical care for about a year and a half in Tehran’s notorious Evin prison.
Kasra Bani Amerian cannot bear the incarceration due to his health condition.
The 26-year-old political prisoner has already undergone chemotherapy. He is currently showing symptoms of leukemia and needs to be monitored by a specialist and given medical treatment.
But judicial authorities have prevented his release for the past 18 months, depriving him of the minimum necessary care and even the medicine he urgently needs.
According to an informed source: “Kasra contracted leukemia at a young age. He was cared for for years. He is now suffering from its effects, including weakness and damage to the shape of both his legs… He needs specific medication to maintain his immune system. However, when his family delivers the drugs, they have to wait several weeks for the prison administration to issue a new permit to deliver the drugs. The prison authorities always ignore the previous permit issued by the prison health service and do not issue the drugs he needs.
The source added: “A few months ago in prison, he was seriously injured due to his inability to move his ankle. In such a situation, he desperately needs long-term rehabilitation and monitoring. specialists, including orthopedists and physiotherapists, and he has to use special shoes which are very expensive. Kasra’s family has provided the shoes several times and has gone to the prison to demand delivery. But the Prison officials do not allow Kasra to receive the shoes for unknown reasons, while the prison doctor has repeatedly prescribed him physical therapy shoes.
Bani Amerian’s family tried unsuccessfully to obtain a humanitarian release due to his medical condition.
Denial of medical treatment is a common tactic used by Iranian authorities to pressure political prisoners.
Amnesty International, UN experts and other human rights organizations have documented numerous occasions when authorities deprived Iranian prisoners of the care they needed.
Although the actual number is unknown, at least three political prisoners have died as a result of inadequate medical treatment or ill-treatment in Iran in 2021, including Adel Kianpour, Sasan Niknafs and Behman Mahjoubi.
